First Official CPR/AED Awareness Week
June 1- 7, 2008

In December of 2007, Congress declared the first week of June each year as National CPR/AED Awareness Week. This year, June 1-7, 2008 will mark the first official observance. Organizations are being encouraged to establish organized programs to ensure proper response to any emergency, providing CPR and AED Training and increase public access to AEDs.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States each year. It affects more that 200,000 Americans each year; that is nearly one death every two minutes. Up to 50,000 of these deaths could have been prevented if someone had initiated the Cardiac Chain of Survival (which includes early access to care and early CPR), and an automated external defibrillator (AED) had been available for immediate use at the time of the emergency.

What are some things you can do in your workplace?

  • Encourage work group discussions about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).
  • Refresh emergency equipment locations and emergency procedures with employees.
  • Conducting CPR/AED and first aid training is something you can do now to protect the longterm safety of your employees.
  • Placement of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can save lives of workers who experience cardiac arrest while on the job, OSHA, on December 17, 2001, encouraged employers to consider making this equipment available in their workplaces.
  • Become a company that is trained, equipped and prepared to respond to any foreseeable emergency.
  • Educate! If someone collapsed from cardiac arrest at your workplace today, how quickly could emergency personnel arrive at your site? What are the victim's chances of survival? Unfortunately, the answers give little room for reliance on a phone call to 9-1-1. Average EMS response time in the United States is at least 10 minutes. Even with the best EMS response, cardiac arrest survival rates drop by 10% for every minute defibrillation is delayed. "An employer has an obligation to provide to all employees a safe and healthy workplace." OSHA 93-01
